Best Essay Feedback and Grading Tools for Teachers in 2026
Essay feedback and grading tools for teachers, compared: handwritten essays, spoken comments, AI-drafted feedback, what students see, privacy and price.
By Logan Shaffer · · 13 min read
An essay feedback tool has one job to do well: get your comments to the student while the essay is still fresh in their mind. The tools below go about it in different ways. Some let you speak your comments. Some have an AI write a first draft for you to check. Some read handwriting and some only take typed work. And each handles student work differently once you are done.
This guide compares 11 essay feedback and grading tools on those points, from free add-ons to platforms sold to whole districts. We make MAMAKO Feedback, so we put it first; we describe every other entry from its maker's own pages as of October 2026.
How We Compared Them
Every entry answers the same seven questions, from the maker's own help, pricing and privacy pages, read on 9 October 2026:
- Best for
- Handwritten essays
- Spoken comments
- Who writes the feedback
- What students get
- Privacy, including whether your data trains AI models
- Price
Spoken comments means you record your voice and the student hears it, or reads what you said. Who writes the feedback asks whether the words are yours, an AI's draft that you check, or an AI's reply that goes straight to the student. Where a maker's pages left a question unanswered, we left that line out.
The 11 Tools at a Glance
The table sums up the entries below, where each claim links to the maker's own page. Not stated means the pages we read did not say.

MAMAKO Feedback
MAMAKO Feedback marks essays by voice. You photograph a stack of paper essays with your phone, talk through each one at your computer the way you would speak to the student, and MAMAKO writes your comments up in your own style, numbers them and pins them to the page.
- Best for: teachers who mark handwritten essays and would rather say their comments than type them.
- Handwritten essays: yes. Open the camera page on your phone from the code on your screen and shoot each page, and the pages land in the batch as you go. A page shot sideways turns upright with one tap.
- Spoken comments: the heart of it. Record once for the whole essay, or a short clip on one spot.
- Who writes the feedback: you say it, and a writing model writes it up as numbered comments in your Comment Style, pinned to the page. You drag any comment to the right spot, add a rubric line or keep a note to yourself. It never grades on its own and never sees an essay you did not photograph.
- What students get: a link with the comments on their own pages, and your voice where you chose it, with no student account. You download a PDF of the essay with the comments in the margins, for printing or the gradebook.
- Privacy: photos, recordings and comments are deleted 30 days after you last work on the essay, or once its student link stops working, whichever comes later. MAMAKO does not use your data to train AI models. What happens to student work has the details.
- Price: $9.95 a month or $99.95 a year for 200 pages a month, where a page is one photo of one side of paper. A busy month can be topped up from your account.
Mote
Mote (opens in a new tab) records voice notes inside Google's classroom tools and other platforms, and calls itself a literacy platform for schools.
- Best for: teachers who want to leave voice comments in Google Docs, Classroom, Slides and Canvas. Mote names students with learning disabilities and multilingual learners (opens in a new tab) among the students it serves.
- Handwritten essays: indirectly. Teachers can add voice notes to PDFs and images in Google Drive (opens in a new tab), such as a photo of a paper essay.
- Spoken comments: the core of the product. Teachers record voice messages inside Google Docs comments (opens in a new tab) and the other tools it supports, and students replay them with a transcript and a translation.
- Who writes the feedback: you, by voice. Mote's Writing Review is a spelling and grammar checker for students, and no page describes AI-drafted comments.
- What students get: a voice note inside the Google tool, or on a link page. Students need no account (opens in a new tab) unless the teacher's privacy settings ask for one.
- Privacy: the privacy policy (opens in a new tab) says Mote complies with FERPA, COPPA and GDPR, and deletes user-made content one year after it was made.
- Price: free for 20 recordings a month, up to a minute each (opens in a new tab), or $99 a year for an individual. School plans (opens in a new tab) run $80 a seat a year for 2 to 9 seats, $1,500 a building, and from $2,500 a year for a district.
Brisk Teaching
Brisk Teaching (opens in a new tab) is a set of AI tools that work inside Google Docs and the other places teachers already write.
- Best for: K-12 teachers working in Google Docs, and the schools and districts that buy for them.
- Handwritten essays: yes. Teachers can upload a photo of handwritten work (opens in a new tab) for Brisk to read.
- Spoken comments: none described. "Your voice" on Brisk's pages means your writing style.
- Who writes the feedback: the AI drafts comments from the essay, guided by your rubric or state standards, and the feedback stays hidden from students until you approve it (opens in a new tab).
- What students get: comments in the student's Google Doc, under the teacher's name (opens in a new tab), and through Canvas SpeedGrader by way of Docs.
- Privacy: Brisk's privacy center (opens in a new tab) says student and teacher inputs are never used to train AI models, and its security FAQs (opens in a new tab) say accounts are deleted after 18 months without use.
- Price: a free plan for teachers (opens in a new tab), and school plans priced on request. Targeted feedback is a premium feature.
Google Classroom
Google Classroom (opens in a new tab) is the assignment hub in Google Workspace for Education, with feedback tools built in.
- Best for: schools already on Google Workspace for Education.
- Handwritten essays: students can attach photos, and teachers can draw and write on images and PDFs in the Classroom mobile app (opens in a new tab), not on the web.
- Spoken comments: on Education Plus or the Teaching and Learning add-on, teachers can record up to 5 minutes of audio, video or screen (opens in a new tab) as a private comment.
- Who writes the feedback: you. On the same paid editions, Gemini drafts feedback from the student's work, grade level and your focus area, and you review and edit it before you share it. It works on Google Docs and Word attachments.
- What students get: your comments in Classroom once you return the work. Students need a school or personal Google account (opens in a new tab).
- Privacy: Google's education privacy FAQ (opens in a new tab) says student information in its core services is never used to train its AI models.
- Price: the Fundamentals edition is free for qualifying schools. Google prices the Teaching and Learning add-on (opens in a new tab), one of the editions with recorded comments and Gemini feedback, through its sales form and partners.
MagicSchool
MagicSchool is an AI platform for teachers, students and districts, with a writing feedback tool among many others.
- Best for: individual teachers trying AI tools, and districts on its Enterprise plan.
- Spoken comments: none described. The tool page's "stays in your voice" (opens in a new tab) means your writing style.
- Who writes the feedback: the AI drafts rubric scores, "Glows & Grows" and next steps from your own rubric. You adjust the scores and edit the feedback (opens in a new tab) before students see anything.
- What students get: approved feedback added to each student's own Google Doc or OneDrive document.
- Limits: MagicSchool's help center says each teacher gets 3 Class Writing Feedback assignments a year (opens in a new tab) unless the district buys its Learning Outcomes Module.
- Privacy: the privacy policy (opens in a new tab) says MagicSchool does not use personal information to train AI models, and that data sent to its AI providers is deleted within 30 days. Its trust center (opens in a new tab) describes it as a school official under FERPA.
- Price: free, or Plus (opens in a new tab) at $8.33 a month billed yearly or $12.99 month to month. Enterprise is priced on request.
CoGrader
CoGrader (opens in a new tab) calls itself an AI grader for teachers and schools.
- Best for: K-12 teachers and schools, with an individual plan for teachers paying out of pocket.
- Handwritten essays: yes. Teachers snap a photo of the stack or upload from the copier. It takes PDFs, and single-page JPG and PNG files (opens in a new tab).
- Spoken comments: none described.
- Who writes the feedback: the AI drafts a grade and comments against your rubric, and you approve every grade. Its home page says nothing reaches a student without you.
- What students get: for Google Classroom, feedback written into the student's Google Doc (opens in a new tab), plus PDF, Word and print; on school and district plans, grades and feedback go back to Canvas and Schoology. CoGrader collects nothing directly from students (opens in a new tab).
- Privacy: the privacy policy (opens in a new tab) says CoGrader does not use customer data, including student work, to train AI models, and deletes data when a teacher or school asks or a contract ends.
- Price: free for 150 submissions a month (opens in a new tab); $19 a month, or $15 a month billed yearly, for 350; schools and districts priced by size.
EssayGrader
EssayGrader (opens in a new tab) is an AI essay grader for teachers and schools.
- Best for: K-12 teachers grading full class sets every month, with a larger plan for college instructors.
- Handwritten essays: yes. Scanned essays are transcribed, and you can check the transcription against the scan (opens in a new tab).
- Spoken comments: none described.
- Who writes the feedback: the AI drafts scores and comments against a built-in or uploaded rubric, and can learn from essays you have already graded. You review and edit everything before it is shared.
- What students get: feedback through the school's learning platform: Google Classroom, Canvas or Schoology. There are no student accounts.
- Privacy: the trust center (opens in a new tab) says student content is contractually barred from AI training, and data stays available for 60 days for export, then is deleted.
- Price: free for 100 essays a month (opens in a new tab) of up to 1,000 words. Pro is $14.99 a month billed yearly, or $19.99 month to month, for 350 essays, and Premium $34.99 or $49.99 for 800.
Khanmigo Writing Coach
Writing Coach (opens in a new tab) is Khan Academy's AI writing tutor, which gives students feedback as they write.
- Best for: US teachers and their students, free.
- Who writes the feedback: the AI, straight to students as they write (opens in a new tab), in categories that follow the writing rubrics middle and high schools use (opens in a new tab). Teachers set the assignment and see the drafts and feedback afterwards. No page describes scores or grades.
- What students get: feedback inside Writing Coach on Khan Academy. Students join with the link or class code their teacher gives them (opens in a new tab).
- Privacy: the privacy policy (opens in a new tab) says Khan Academy's agreements with its AI providers do not let them train on what students and teachers type, in its section for schools.
- Price: free for teachers (opens in a new tab). Learners and families pay $4 a month or $44 a year, and district tools are priced on request.
Gradescope
Gradescope (opens in a new tab), from Turnitin, grades paper and digital assignments against a rubric.
- Best for: instructors grading paper exams, homework and problem sets, mostly in STEM and mostly at universities.
- Handwritten essays: yes. Students upload PDFs or photos of their work, or the teacher scans the papers in bulk.
- Spoken comments: none described. Feedback is rubric items, typed comments and marks on the page.
- Who writes the feedback: you. On the Institutional plan, AI sorts similar short answers into groups (opens in a new tab) you confirm, for multiple-choice and one-line answers; essays are graded by hand.
- What students get: feedback on the Gradescope site or app, and a PDF of their submission (opens in a new tab). Students need an account.
- Privacy: the privacy policy (opens in a new tab) says the school stays in control of student data under FERPA, and that uploaded data may refine Gradescope's own AI features, such as handwriting recognition.
- Price: Basic is free (opens in a new tab); the Institutional plan is quoted.
Turnitin Feedback Studio
Feedback Studio (opens in a new tab) puts Turnitin's plagiarism checking and its grading tools in one place, sold to institutions.
- Best for: schools and colleges that want integrity checks and feedback in one tool.
- Handwritten essays: only with the Paper to Digital (opens in a new tab) add-on to Feedback Studio, which takes scanned handwritten work.
- Spoken comments: yes. In the new experience, an audio or video summary of up to 5 minutes (opens in a new tab), with captions and a transcript.
- Who writes the feedback: you, with AI suggestions in beta: the Trust Center (opens in a new tab) describes first-pass comments and a drafted summary comment for the teacher to review. The paid Clarity add-on gives students an AI chat about how their draft fits the assignment and rubric (opens in a new tab), within rules the teacher sets.
- What students get: feedback in the Similarity Report, opened from the school's learning platform or the Turnitin website, where students get a Turnitin account (opens in a new tab).
- Privacy: Turnitin says it trains no generative AI models. Its services privacy policy (opens in a new tab) allows anonymized student data to be used, and the Trust Center says such data may train its AI-writing detector.
- Price: no public price; Turnitin's administrator FAQ (opens in a new tab) sends schools to their account manager.
Writable
Writable (opens in a new tab), from HMH, is a writing practice and feedback platform for grades 3 to 12.
- Best for: grade 3 to 12 classrooms and districts, with rubric-aligned comments in English or Spanish (opens in a new tab).
- Spoken comments: yes, audio or video up to 5 minutes (opens in a new tab), recorded under the rubric in your grading view and sent with your written feedback.
- Who writes the feedback: the AI drafts rubric-aligned comments and scores, and you edit them before they are sent (opens in a new tab). A district setting lets teachers send all AI feedback with one click (opens in a new tab), and RevisionAid, where it is on, gives students AI revision help directly.
- What students get: feedback inside Writable, in its chat. Students have accounts, and grades sync to learning platforms and Google Classroom.
- Privacy: the privacy policy (opens in a new tab) says Writable never sells data, and keeps writing samples without names after an account is deleted.
- Price: a free trial, and from $1 a student a month (opens in a new tab), with discounts available.
Which One Should You Use?
Start from the essays you mark and from what your school already pays for.
- Typed essays in Google Docs, AI drafts you check: Brisk Teaching, MagicSchool, CoGrader or EssayGrader. Compare the free allowances first.
- A school on Google Workspace's paid editions: Classroom's recorded comments and Gemini feedback are already there.
- Practice drafts students revise on their own: Khanmigo Writing Coach, free for US teachers, or Writable's RevisionAid.
- Exams and problem sets on paper: Gradescope.
- Integrity checks with feedback: Turnitin Feedback Studio.
- Voice notes in Google tools: Mote.
- Handwritten essays, marked in your own words: MAMAKO Feedback. Photograph the stack, talk through each essay, and adjust the comments it writes up before the student opens their link.
Whatever you choose, ask who writes the words the student reads, where the essays go, and whether they train an AI model.
